About the Otago Community Hospice
293 North Road, ![]() The Otago Community Hospice provides palliative care through a multi-disciplinary team of dedicated personnel. The team comprises doctors, nurses and social workers/counselors who support about 300 terminally-ill patients and their families throughout the region. Rural patients have access to the wide range of services offered to those patients in Dunedn. All care is provided at no cost. The Hospice has a 12-bed inpatient facility offering symptom control, respite and terminal care. In-patients now have more complex symptoms and require greater nursing care. It also provides a day-care service and out-patient services are offered at the Hospice as well as from District Hospitals. Occupancy has been relieved by extended hours in the Rural Outreach services. These are functioning well in Otago, with a seven-day week service. Early intervention/follow-up by by care co-ordinators, day Hospice visits and outpatient clinics has resulted in people staying longer in their own homes and symptoms can be better managed there. While a percentage of basic costs are provided by the government, the remainder depends upon charity. In addition, there are over 200 volunteers without whose help the Hospice could not operate. |
