Otago Community Hospice
Gala Auction
17 May 2008
It is a pleasure and indeed an honour, to be associated with "the Otago Community Hospice
Gala Auction".
The Hospice movement in New Zealand is not of long duration, and all Hospices struggle
to provide the best care clinically in surroundings which are congenial and welcoming.
Much of hospice work today is carried out off-premises, caring for those who need
assistance in the community while making sure that for the terminally ill, there is
always a place to go which feels safe and professional.
A large proportion of the Otago Community Hospice funding must be raised from the
community; only 60% is funded through the District Health Board. But the Otago
community is known for its support of Hospice and I am sure that this major event in
the Hospice calendar will be as well attended as usual.
This will be an evening and an event to remember. You will be entertained in lovely
surroundings and with some stunning items for auction. I have had an early preview of
the auction items. They range from art to tourist opportunities, from medical procedures
to quintessentially Dunedin Scottish objects. There is literature, jewellery and fashion,
and of course mainland wine. Of the many charity auctions I have attended, I cannot
recall such a varied range of objects, experiences, food, wine and accommodation on
sale. There is even something for the sports-obsessed and both legal and dentistry
professional services on offer.
