Observation: Mars at Opposition, 2003

Title: Mars at opposition of 2003
Date: 2003-08-08 NZST
Time: 23.30 NZST
Location: Three Mile Hill, Dunedin
Equipment: Astrophysics 6" apochromat

Description

Observed Mars during close opposition of 2003 on 8 August.
Observed Mars with Mervyn and Ashley from Three Mile Hill.
Using Mervyn's 6" apochromat refractor.
Excellent detail on surface, especially around polar cap.
Used magenta, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, polarised filters which made small difference in contrast.
One very prominent surface feature and many others less obvious.
Definitely best views of Mars ever.

Thoughts

We got some awesome views of Mars during this close approach, but this night was probably the best. The apochromat was superb for this type of viewing. Note that the pictures at the top of this page have nothing to do with Mars and are purely there for decoration.
