Observation: Transit of Mercury 2006

Title: Observations of a bright aurora display

Description

Observed a conspicuous aurora on 2004-11-10 22.12 NZDST.
22.15 Pale green curtains in south around 180° of the horizon.
22.30 Intense flaming up to the zenith.
22.35 Strong purple blue ray in south west.
22.40 Entire sky flaming, dimmer in south.
23.05 More diffuse glow in south, less flaming.
23.20 Very intense green glow in south, with some strong rays to the zenith.
23.45 No flaming, two rays to zenith, glow in south less intense
23.55 Some flaming low in south gradually getting higher to the zenith.
00.15 Dimmer diffuse glow in south, flaming up to 45°
00.30 Light cloud appeared. Glow in south and flaming still visible.
00.35 Ended observing.

Thoughts

This was an intense auroral display over at least 2 hours. It changed form quickly during the period I observed it, and there was an impressive variety of colours visible at different times. Note that the pictures at the top of this page are not related to this event and are purely there for decoration.
