Political Wit

Entry 152, on 2005-04-04 at 15:20:23 (Rating 2, Politics)

The Labour Party here in New Zealand just completed its annual conference and the deputy leader, Michael Cullen, has unleashed his traditional witty attack on his party's political foes.

Often the phrase "political wit" is almost an oxymoron, but in this case several of the comments were worthy of note, but I particularly enjoyed this one concerning the leader of the opposition, Don Brash (a figure I have commented on in my blog before). Here's the comment...

"The official biography of Dr Brash portrays a seriously strange and out-of-touch person.

From the old pyjamas to the vacuuming of the concrete floor to the frozen corned beef and the whole air of slightly deranged hermetic retreat from the real world, this is the oddest politician we have had on offer in New Zealand for a long time.

In the end he appears to be a cross between Mr Magoo and Dr Strangelove. One can almost see him riding the nuclear bomb down to the ground yelling, "Gone by lunchtime!".

Dr Brash has spent the last 18 months pretending to be a different person from the one he has so publicly been for so long.

In fact the Emperor has no new clothes - only that old pair of pyjamas. And he does not feel comfortable in them."

I mean, what a classic! The image conjured up by the cross between Mr Magoo and Dr Strangelove is particularly bizarre. I just love it when politicians ignore their normal politically correct attitudes and come up with this sort of stuff. Its one of the things I like about Winston Peters as well, I often have a little laugh to myself when he comes up with a particularly witty comment!

So nice one Michael, that was one of the best comments to have come from our politicians for quite some time, I think!
