Transit 2004, 28

This is the view from our hut in Hermannsburg where we stayed the night after having to abandon the trip to Wallace Rockhole. Hermannsburg was originally a German misisonary town but now it is an aboriginal town, although all the important jobs seem to be taken by white Australians.

We were a bit worried that our hut was enclosed by a high barbed wire fence and we were advised to leave the petrol filler door open so the locals could help themselves to petrol for sniffing without damaging the vehicle (no alcohol is allowed in the town). Well, we survived the night here without any major drama but it showed one of the more distrurbing aspects of Australia I have come across.
