The Notches

This is the roughest and most spectacular part of the track. The track winds around steep areas of the hills through tunnels and crosses gulches on viaducts. The photo shows the steep, rocky cliffs which drop to the stream below. This is about 37 kilometers from the start and about 190 meters above sea level.

I really like this photo. It shows how desolate and isolated the area is. Its quite amazing to realise we are only about 40 kilometers from the flat green farms of the Taieri Plain.
