Easter Fun

Entry 150, on 2005-03-31 at 14:25:10 (Rating 1, Travel)

This is my first blog entry for a week because I have been away over the Easter break in Queenstown. Not, unfortunately, to enjoy the fun activities and great scenery there, but to install and fine tune a database system I have been working on for months now for a real estate company there.

Doing technical computer work like programming requires getting into the right frame of mind (at least for me). After about 30 minutes of relatively unproductive work I find myself getting into the groove and then I can achieve heaps. It requires no disruptions and well set up equipment, but I can have multiple updates and tasks all going at the same time, and after a few hours I can have many tricky technical problems solved. I got into that zone several times over the long weekend so the system is all up and running nicely now.

The weather wasn't that great anyway, so I probably wouldn't have been able to do much outside during the day, although we had one day of beautiful autumnal weather, when I spent a bit of time at the lake shore.

Queenstown still has some of its personality intact, especially in the center of the town, and around the lake shore; but out of control development of ugly new hotels and apartments is still spoiling it a bit. I guess its all part of what some people call progress, but what I would call the disgusting greed of the new class of rich, thoughtless business people who care about nothing except their own bank balance.

On a more positive note, we did our traditional easter egg hunt for Phillip and Nicole on Easter morning. They are definitely getting better at finding where I - oops I mean the easter bunny - hides things, so more devious hiding places will definitely be found next year!
