Computers

Entry 29, on 2004-08-25 at 08:08:22 (Rating 1, Computers)

A very experienced and skillful computer consultant colleague of mine just made a big mistake. He connected a network cable into the wrong port on an Apple Airport base station and stopped hundreds of people on our network from accessing the Internet.

One of the Ethernet ports on the Airport runs a DHCP server. This conflicts with the official server so that many computers get invalid IP addresses. It was sort of funny except our network manager doesn't have a sense of humour!

Anyway, I'll be looking very carefully at those network ports next time I plug an Airport in, I can tell you!
