Electricity Reform

Entry 50, on 2004-09-07 at 10:02:41 (Rating 3, News)

New Zealand has had a cold winter this year and many people are struggling to pay their power bill because they need extra heating. There are stories on the news about older people having to do without food because they need the money to pay for power, and others who have to stay in bed all day to stay warm.

Power prices have escalated by a huge amount ever since the electricity supply here was changed from a state monopoly to an "open market". Its yet another disaster brought about by the new right ideologists. Since the change we have had higher prices, little investment in new generation, and wasted capacity.

When will people learn that free markets don't work! We need central control of key assets, for the good of everyone.
