What's Next?

Yet again the rumour mills are busy speculating on what will be next from Apple. I know I'm really tied up with Apple technology (I do Mac consulting and programming, and me and the rest of my family have 3 iPods, an iPhone and about 10 Mac computers) but it seems to me that even in the computer world as a whole and even in the whole technology industry Apple stands above all the others.

Is there ever any excitement when Compaq are about to bring out a new laptop? Nothing that I've ever heard of. And how many people really care about the latest Zune? A few, but not many. The only area where other companies come close is Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo with their game consoles and the occasional top game (GTA, Halo).

So what is Apple about to do with their latest update to the MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops? I guess they will be even more beautiful than what we already have, and they are already pretty impressive. We will see better CPUs and GPUs, of course; higher resolution screens; maybe Blu-ray writers (or maybe not - they aren't even in desktop Macs yet); trackpads which recognise gestures; and nice curvy designs like the MacBook Air and iPhone.

I'm not sure what could be done with the iPod. The iPod Touch already has the new OS which gives it a lot of functionality. Maybe version 2.1 will be released (for the iPhone as well) and maybe they will add a camera or GPS. The iPod Nanos might get higher capacities but I'm not sure what else could be done with them because they are already very functional and so compact as well as being reasonably priced (for an Apple product).

I have my iPhone 3G so I don't care too much about iPods but I will be interested to see what happens with the laptops because although I love my MacBook Pro 17, there's always that chance to upgrade!
