Myth

Myth is a game (or a series of games) from Bungie Software which put you in control of a fantasy army of warriors, archers, dwarfs, and many other characters in battle against the overwhelming forces of evil. You control the characters (or groups of characters) with the mouse and keyboard and attack the enemy with swords, spears, arrows, flaming Molitov cocktails, fireballs, etc. There's plenty of explosions, blood and body parts being blown around but the violence isn't really nasty.

The Myth series started with Myth: The Fallen Lords which was a classic and utilised sophisticated graphics for the time. But more importantly it had very non-linear game play so that the played had plenty of opportunity to use different strategies to win the battles without having to necessarily play a specific way as many games demand. There was also a humorous edge which added to the game: the characters of the different units (especially the dwarfs) made the game more fun.

Myth I is still worth playing, but now Myth II and Myth III are also available. Myth II builds on Myth I and adds some new elements to the play and better graphics. Myth III is definitely better than the other two from a technical point of view, but I think it loses something in the game play area.

Scene from Myth

Here's a scene from Myth II with some warriors and archers about to cross a river. You can see the shadows, and ripples and reflections in the water, so the graphics do have some nice details, although they aren't up to the standards of modern games which make full use of 3D acceleration hardware.

Another Scene from Myth

Here my forces are under some serious bombardment from enemy artillery which are attacking from off screen. The dwarfs are tricky characters to handle because they often end up blowing up their own friends by mistake. On many occasions you hear the beserks cursing them for their poor aim!
