Finder Preferences

You can make Mac OS X more or less similar to Mac OS 9 by changing the Finder Preferences. These are accessed through the Preferences command in the Finder menu when the Finder is at the front. These are the settings I use - they are very different from the previous Finder so would take more time to adapt to.

Finder Prefs

I don't show anything on my desktop. Many people find this disconcerting! I prefer to leave the desktop clear except for occasional temporary files. Disks, etc, which normally appear on the Desktop can be found at the Computer level in a Finder window (click the Computer button).

I make new Finder windows open at the computer level but most users should open at the home level instead (see the section on storage locations above). Because I work with my two side-by-side windows I turn off "Always open folders in a new window".

The option to "Always show file extension" is useful. File extensions are something that traditional Mac users don't like but they are useful and can make interaction with other computers and with the Internet easier.
