Nicole's Ice Cream

(Up to OJB's Misc Kids Photo Page)

This is a picture of my daughter, Nicole, when she was about 2. It was taken in our section in the late afternoon summer sun.

I like this picture because of the angle of the light. Some of the best portraits are taken with low light on the subject and this photo shows the effectiveness of this technique. The colours are also gentle and subdued and enhance the mood of the photo. The fact that she isn't looking at the camera makes the photo seem more informal and natural. Nicole also cooperated with an appropriately cute, mischievous expression at the time!

This was taken on Fujicolor 100 print film. I used spot metering to make sure the exposure was correct for a moderately illuminated part of the frame. That way the brightly lit areas stand out and the dark areas are just a bit under-exposed. I used an f/ratio of about 4 to make sure the depth of field threw the background out of focus and this avoided any distracting elements.
