The Hill Above Kaiteriteri Beach

Kaiteriteri is a small settlement in the Nelson district at the top of the South Island. There is a lovely beach there with golden sand which is very popular during Nelson's warm summers.

This photo handles a wide range of lighting from bright clouds to deep shadow in the foreground. The foreground is almost completely black so only the shapes are apparent, the detail of the surface and colour of the objects is gone. This forces the attention of the viewer onto the shapes involved instead of the detail of what the object actually is. The clouds provide some detail, with a blue sky this photo would be come a simple two-tone image.

The low angle the shot was taken from empahsises the way the tree and sign-post reach into the sky. Limited color range is an important aspect in this photo - more so in this than in any others even. In fact this is an extreme case of the use of limited colour, there is only one colour present - blue.
