Moeraki

A few minutes up the coast from Moeraki is the famous Moeraki Boulders. These are almost perfectly spherical boulders up to 2.2 meters in diameter. They are septarian concretions, which have been uncovered from the surrounding mudstone by erosion. They were formed from precipitated calcite which defused into the area, a process which took about 5 million years.
