Stewart Island: Sunrise

Stewart Island is New Zealand's third largest island with an area of about 1700 square kilometers but it is mostly uninhabited with just one town and a population of about 320. Access is by light plane or by boat. The distance from the mainland is just 30 kilometers but if Foveaux Strait is rough than can seem like a long way!

This is a full colour photo but the gray sky and backlighting have made it appear almost as if it is black and white. The major light source is from the water and behind the subjects making this quite challenging to get right but effective when it is. I did minimal processing in Photoshop to get this final result (I straightened the horizon and applied light sharpening).
