Dock Basics

The Dock is one of the most useful parts of Mac OS X, but so many people refuse to use it properly. OK, so sometimes it does get in the way a bit, and use up screen space you might want to use for more essential content, but by customising its appearance and behaviour, the bad parts can be minimised without affecting the useful parts.

First read these basic instructions on using the dock which tells you a bit about what it does, how it works, and how to change the contents.
