Warbirds Over Wanaka, 2006

This is my report on the Warbirds Over Wanaka Air Show for 2006. I've chosen some of the highlights and more unusual displays for this web site. I used my latest digital camera, a Canon EOS350D with a 300 mm (effective focal length almost 500mm) for these photos.

Ground Forces

One of the cool things about Warbirds is the displays of vintage tractors, military vehicles, and other old machinery. Its always worth a wander around before the air show starts to have a look at these.

Aerobatics

There's usually a couple of aerobatic displays at the shows. Last time world champion, Jurgis Kairys, did an incredible display in his Su-31. This time he was back and we also had womens world champ, Svetlana Kapanina, there.

Old Aircraft

The oldest aircraft at the show as the Bleriot. As well as that there were several World War I fighters, such as the Sopwith Camel and Fokker Triplane.

World War II

These aircraft come from around the World War II era. Many classic aircraft, as well as some less well known ones, from this era have been displayed in the past, and many were back again for this show.

Air Force Display

The Royal New Zealand Air force always puts on a good display, even after the jet fighter section (flying A4 Skyhawks) was closed. They still show transport aircraft, helicopters, and parachute teams.

The F-111

The F-111 was a special feature of the show. Even though it was a lot more modern than the other aircraft, it is still quite old, and was retired from the US Air Force in the 1990s. The aircraft which visited the show was from the Australian Air Force which still uses them.

More Jets

Each year the show has a greater variety of aircraft. This includes older ones, like the Bleriot, and more recent ones like the jets, especially the L-39, F-111 and A-37. There are also early jets like the Vampire and Hawker Hunter.
